Electric-powered commercial jets may still be a figment of the imagination, but smaller electric aircraft are already making it to market. Taurus Electro gliders are set to be produced by year’s end, which could make them the first two-seater, commercially produced electric aircraft available for purchase.

Pipistrel of Slovenia sells this and other non-electric Taurus gliders, which have won prizes for efficiency. CEO Ivo Boscarol said customers who have ordered the company’s other lightweight craft are closely eyeing the new, “greener” electric model, ibm thinkpad t40p battery, which will cost around $133,000, or 85,000 euros.

The Federal Aviation Administration considers electric aircraft experimental, so they can’t be flown under the same rules as light sport aircraft. However, the Experimental Aircraft Association last week asked the FAA to change the classifications, and expects a decision within about six months. If the rule changes, the U.S. market for personal, electric aircraft is likely to ibm thinkpad t41 battery expand.

Kindle owners rejoice: Amazon announced an upgrade and an add-on that should please current owners of the device and tempt a few more consumers into the fold.

Kindle engineers have been hard at work on a firmware upgrade that will increase the life of the device when wireless is turned on. Instead of lasting four days, Kindle will now last 7 — an 85% increase. Battery life with wireless off remains around 2 weeks.

Amazon is also adding a native PDF viewer. Now Kindle owners don’t need to convert PDFs to Kindle files in order to read them on the device. Satellite M105 battery, Satellite M110 battery, Satellite M115 battery.

Intel on Monday launched Centrino 2, its latest mobile platform, which the company claims will increase laptop battery life while delivering speedier performance and faster wireless connectivity.

After four refreshes, the new chipset platform is Intel’s first major Centrino upgrade after its predecessor was launched in 2003. Running faster processors, asus laptop battery, the Centrino 2 platform feature will better multimedia performance while consuming less power, the company said.

Laptops with the Centrino 2 platform include Core 2 Duo processors running between 2.26GHz and 3.06GHz, a graphics chipset capable of handling high-definition graphics and a wireless chipset. Three of the new Core 2 Duo processors run at 25 watts for lower asus a31-s5 battery power consumption compared to earlier processors, which ran at 35 watts of higher.

Intel plans to ship a quad-core Core 2 chip for the platform later this year for gaming, said Mooly Eden, vice president of Intel’s asus a31-s6 battery mobile platforms group, during a launch event in San Francisco. Centrino 2 chips are manufactured using the 45-nanometer process.

A gaggle of new wireless connectivity features in the wireless chipset includes support for 802.11n wireless networking and WiMax wireless broadband. Laptop vendors like Lenovo are planning to offer additional mobile broadband options like UWB (ultra-wideband) in future Centrino 2 asus a32-a8 battery laptops.

Some users spend more time with their laptops than their wives, so it was important to include better entertainment options on Centrino 2 laptops, Eden said.

The laptops will be able to handle 3D graphics and high-definition content through the new GMA X4500MHD integrated graphics processor. The chipset supports DirectX 10 and is capable of off-loading the processor by taking on heavier graphics loads by hardware-based decoding. Users will be able to watch a two-hour Blu-ray movie on a single six-cell asus a32-m9 battery charge, Intel officials said.

“The world is going to high-definition… it will happen this year or next year,” Eden said. By 2013, the number of Blu-ray drives shipping in laptops will outnumber Blu-ray drive shipments in game consoles, he said.

To improve multimedia performance while saving battery life in laptops, Intel has added technology called Switchable graphics to the Centrino 2 platform. The laptops can switch from a discrete graphics card to an integrated graphics processor when running on a asus a32-s5 battery. Users will have the option to switch between cards either manually or automatically.

Intel also announced Centrino 2 for vPro, which has security management features allowing remote fixes.

The new platform and its graphics chipset make the company more competitive with Advanced Micro Devices, whose Puma laptop platform raised the bar in handling high-definition content, said Nathan Brookwood, asus a32-s6 battery, principal analyst at Insight 64. “Integrated graphics has never been Intel’s strong point in the notebook [space]. They are committed to eliminating graphics as a source of competitive weakness,” Brookwood said.

Companies including Lenovo, Hewlett-Packard and Fujitsu have announced new business and ultraportable laptops based on the Centrino 2 platform.

Of course, what makes this version of the Samsung Go different from the unlocked version is that for $199 (plus monthly data charges) you get access to AT&T’s 3G network. It costs $35 per month if you go with the 200MB plan, but the more practical 5GB plan (particularly if you like to go to bandwidth-heavy sites such as YouTube) costs $60 per month. In addition to allowing for a more realistic amount of data per month, the 5GB plan includes a battery charge of 5 cents for every megabyte you go over the limit; with the 200MB plan, that overage charge is 10 cents per megabyte.

Using Speedtest.net, we tested AT&T’s 3G network’s speeds from within our Manhattan office. We saw an average download speed of 1.1 Mbps, and an average upload speed of 170.0 Kbps (or about 0.2 Mbps). That download speed isn’t quite as fast as the HP Mini 311 on Verizon Wireless’ network, which fell between 1.2 and 1.3 Mbps. Its upload speeds were slower, too; the Mini 311 hovered between 500 and 600 Kbps (or, about 0.6 Mbps).

Anecdotally, our connection over AT&T was relatively slow. Even though we had all but one bar of service, it still took 15 seconds to load ESPN.com, 40 seconds to load Laptopmag.com, and 23 seconds to load NYTimes.com. The HP Mini 311, Sony, meanwhile, loaded the same sites in 16, 11, and 11 seconds, respectively.
    Battery Life and Wi-Fi
While the first Samsung Go unit we tested had a six-cell battery that lasted 8:23 on a charge, the version sold through AT&T comes with a smaller four-cell battery, which delivers much shorter battery life. With Wi-Fi enabled, this Go lasted just 2:47 on our Web surfing test; that time dropped to 2:42 once we logged on using 3G instead.
While it’s nice to know the 3G connectivity doesn’t seem to significantly affect battery life, less than three hours for a netbook is unacceptable, especially when the average one lasts over five hours. Having always-on connectivity might make a netbook more mobile, but this smaller battery certainly counteracts that. AT&T would have a much stronger product if it sold the Go with a six-cell battery, offering both ubiquitous Internet access and long Sony VGP-BPS2 life.

The Go’s wireless 802.11b/g radio delivered throughput of 19.6 Mbps and 13.1 Mbps at 15 and 50 feet, respectively. While that’s weaker than the average (20.8 and 17.1 Mbps), we found that even in an apartment where three laptops were already Sony VGP-BPL2 competing for bandwidth from our wireless-G router, the Samsung Go held its own; we didn’t experience any pauses while streaming a five-minute YouTube clip.
    Energy Efficiency
The Go took 1:14 to charge to 80 percent, and 2:13 to completely recharge. During this time, it consumed a total of 4096.4 watts. By dividing the Sony VGP-BPS2A life by the total watts, we were able to derive the LAPTOP Battery Efficiency Rating, which came out to 24.5 (lower scores are better in this case). Given that the average netbook we test has an energy efficiency index of 16.8, that’s not terribly green. However, the Go’s EPEAT rating is 21 (out of 27), which is good.

It’s no secret, the Palm Pre chugs battery like an SUV burns fuel. During our own tests, we noticed that it could barely make it through the workday and other users are reporting about 8 hours of up time even without heavy usage. Proud Pre owner Tom Humplik helped us come up with a few tweaks to help keep your Pre juiced for a full 12-16 hour day under moderate usage.

    1. Turn down the brightness
The Pre’s screen is crisper than a cucumber in May and it looks gorgeous with the brightness hiked to full, but doing so will kill your battery. Turn down the brightness and tell your Pre to idle more.

    Open the main menu.
Find the “Screen & Lock” icon and click it.
Under “Brightness,” Sony VGP-BPS9,pull the toggle all the way to the left.
Change the default “Turn off after” setting from 2 minutes to 30 seconds.
Read on for more tips on how to save battery life on your Palm Pre.
    2. You’re not lost! Turn off the GPS
Leaving your GPS on will hog your battery life. And if you really are lost, battery life is even more important. Plus, you can always use Google Maps since it takes advantage of triangulation and doesn’t require the GPS chip to work.

    Open the main menu.
    Open Location Services.
Under “Use GPS” move the toggle from “On” to “Off.”
    3. Sign out of your Sony VGP-BPS9/B Instant Messaging accounts.
If you’re at the movies or at work and don’t need to be reached, sign out of your buddy lists to preserve power.

    Open the main menu.
    Click the Messaging icon.
Click the Buddies tab up top.
Click your green status symbol (typically next to Available).
    Choose “Sign Off.”
    4. Close unused applications
Don’t force the Pre to multi-task if you don’t need it to. Closing out multiple applications, Sony VGP-BPS9/S,or “Cards,” can help throttle down some hardware and save juice.

    Navigate to the Pre’s desktop.
Swipe away any cards that you don’t currently need.
    5. Throttle E-mail Auto-check
The Palm Pre, by default, checks for new e-mail every 15 minutes. Unless you’re expecting something important during a busy work day, we suggest turning this down so that the Pre checks less frequently. Plus,Sony VGP-BPS9A, you can always manually check when you need to most.

    Open the e-mail application.
On the top left, click the E-mail drop-down menu.
    Choose “Preferences and Accounts.”
    Click an account name.
Under “Sync” there are two options: Show E-mail and “Get E-mail.” Click “Get E-mail.”
Choose every “1 hour,” or longer, to preserve Sony VGP-BPS9A/B life.
